I guess I'm happy about this... but I find it kinda sad too. Apple used to be the minimalist, clean, and champions of the "it just works". Now so many people are getting lost in the gestures, repaint/caching, warring apps and incompatible standards, that this pairing down is increasingly necessary. It strikes me as something of a halfway point to a phone version of CarPlay. A safety feature that needs immediate investment. Car focus is overly prescriptive, and focus in general doesn't make my phone really safe in the car. And DO NOT start with me about Siri. I could rant forever, so don't let that take away from the meat of this announcement.
