How can I put this, you don't want this free thing or big name tax preparing companies. Everyone from poor people to billionaires needs a guy who can game the system. The popular sentiment on HN and similar sites is strange to me, yes the IRS knows how much I owe them, no I don't want to pay that, I want to pay less or get more refund (same thing, taking into account witholdings). Do you all have so much money you think everyone else also thinks the convenience of filing tax is not worth the extra money? The right guy has saved me 10K+, this is especially true when you contract. The thing is, the government doesn't know everything I do, and I won't be able to even think of those things when filing. I need a guy asking me "did you work from home or take toll way to work?" And the works his magic. You think you're doing poor people a service but they'll file it on irs's website and get a lot less because they don't know to ask the right questions to get all the nice deductions. I swear everything on HN political these days is "big gov and corp bad,never trust". It's never that simple. Oh and get this, maybe all these people behind this movement don't know this but every poor person I have known files taxes for free. Not only are there volunteer ngo's, individuals also do that at libraries and such. "The government already knows how much I make and how much I owe, why don't they send me the bill?" So you can tell them you owe less! There is just no way around the fact that there are tax deductions and exemptions and all that.
