Not an emacs user (sadly), but worth pointing out that one can map modifier keys to other input devices like pedals. It is very helpful if you are dealing with RSIs affecting your hands. (Admittedly, pedals work well only in a desk scenario. I can't see myself logging them to a cafe.)
