I liked to do an "Eng Weekly" meet where we took a deeper dive on some technical thing. Might involve someone doing some research and showing off something they learned, or doing a deep dive on some tech we used or looking at data structures or design patterns in our code base that could be improved in some non-obvious way.
Anything was fair game as long as it was technical and interesting. My main goal was to level-up the team a bit, show them how fun actually building stuff was vs adding a dependency of some 3rd party service or library, and have some fun just nerding out a bit on what other stuff was going on in OSS or the community at large.
- kesava 3y agointeresting. how do you get volunteers for this weekly meeting?
- mattbillenstein 3y agoYes, we keep a schedule, people can signup with a topic - I just ask for volunteers or suggest stuff for people to take a look at.
- badpun 3y agoDo people have mental bandwidth to learn about stuff not directly related to their day-to-day tasks? In my experience, in a coding job, I'm typically overwhelmed by the mountains of minutia that the codebase entails. I'd prefer to perfect my knowledge of the code base instead of listening to some talk, that I might as well find on youtube.
- mattbillenstein 3y agoI'd say it was mostly focused somewhat on the problems at hand or a deeper understanding of what made things work.
