Miraca Gross' entire book on the education of exceptionally gifted students does this quite well. You may not find the parts I excerpted convincing, but you might find other convincing. This book is titled "Exceptionally Gifted Children: Edition 2". You can find articles for free online about the research if you are interested. I believe her work generalized outside of the exceptionally gifted range (because I'm certainly not one), and outside of Australia.
