I think the evidence is strong he broke the laws, he said might be broken if one was rash enough to do this. The carcase of the deer being pretty conclusive. Those don't look like shotgun hits, or post morbidity testing.

Quote: I didn't actually ask the DNR about using a Mountain Howitzer, but according to Thomas Van Haren, a Conservation Warden & Natural Resources Policy Officer of the Bureau of Law Enforcement for the Wisconsin DNR - "the use of a Cannon is not legal for hunting any species of game in Wisconsin." Does the law specify which weapons are legal to use in killing a wild animal? Is this a case of whatever is not explicitly allowed is assumed to be forbidden?

In Wisconsin, it is illegal to hunt a game or discharge a hunting firearm within, at least 500 yards, from public areas like highways, public roads, etc. Hunting firearms restricted include shotguns with more than 4 shots, a muzzle rifle, or a .40 caliber or more firearm. Distance restriction hunting law in Wisconsin mostly affects deer hunting. Any deer hunting activity or gaming within the 50 yards’ restriction is unlawful in every part of the state. The state legislature passes this law to tackle safety concerns in Wisconsin. [1] (1) Weapons. No person may: (a) Hunt with any means other than a rifle, shotgun, handgun, bow and arrow, crossbow, or falconry. (b) Hunt with a machine gun or other fully automatic weapon. (c) Hunt a game bird with or while in possession of a shotgun larger than 10 gauge. [2] A 12 Pound Mountain Howitzer Cannon is greater than .40 caliber and does not qualify as a rifle, shotgun, handgun, bow and arrow, crossbow, or falconry. Even a 4-bore rifle would exceed the legal size limit.
