Secondary Bacterial Pneumonia Drove Many Covid-19 Deaths
- melling 3y ago“ “Our data suggested that the mortality related to the virus itself is relatively low, but other things that happen during the ICU stay, like secondary bacterial pneumonia, offset that.”
- notacoward 3y agoDiscussed earlier: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=35855782 https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=35855782 Also, as I noted then, the study is pretty limited by the fact that it only included patients at one hospital. We don't really need the same weak study linked here multiple times by partisans.
- jgalt212 3y agoIt would be very interesting if this research did not find what it purports to have have found. i.e. what they really found was a heretofore undiscovered hospital-wide pneumonia outbreak.
- cheaprentalyeti 3y agoWell, there's also the multiple researchers who claimed success using a combination of HCQ and Azithromycin. And also the Spanish Nursing Home study. We've been told for the past three years to Shut Up And Do What The Experts Say, but if it goes against the Specially Annointed Covid Experts suddenly Northwestern University is no good? BTW, finally... do you know who wrote the study that said all the people in the Spanish Flu died of secondary infections? Look it up, you won't believe me.
- notacoward 3y agoOne of the things some of us have learned during the last few years is how to recognize a study that's too severely cherry-picked to be useful, and to call that out regardless of whether it's consistent with our own previous biases. And then there are those who double down on their preexisting biases, hyping any favorable study and nit-picking any unfavorable one beyond all sense of proportion to its quality. In other words, exactly how this became such a mess in the first place. Unfortunately, such baseless contrarianism seems to have found a welcoming home here.

- politician 3y agoDoes this mean that antibiotic treatments for pneumonia would have saved a significant number of lives?
- cheaprentalyeti 3y agoYes, and it strongly implies the fake studies where they administered one dose of Azithromycin and evaluated the patient twenty four days later in the course of Covid treatment were bs.
