Seaflooding
- pipo234 3y agoOne of the proposed options, flooding the Qattara Depression was actually proposed by the CIA to President Dwight Eisenhower as a way to achieve peace in the Middle East. According to https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Qattara_Depression https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Qattara_Depression: > The resulting lagoon, according to the CIA, would have four benefits: > - it is easier to extract oil from offshore platforms than in swamps, > - the flow will turn the hydroelectric power station, > - fishing, resorts, pearls, > - it would get Egyptian president Gamel Abdel Nasser's "mind on other matters" because "he needed some way to get off the Soviet hook".
- ttyprintk 3y agoMost of these are on fault lines, where the added weight could trigger an earthquake. Not good for Jerusalem and Los Angeles.
- pipo234 3y agoI understand very little about earthquakes, tectonics, etc. Indeed, straining fault lines is probably asking for trouble. But conversely, would not drilling pipes, building dams, flooding large regions somehow improve (long term) safety? Ie. reduce severity / frequency / risk of earthquakes? Do we know or have theories?
