Agreed, phone screen size should be specified in square centimeters!
- pavlov 3y agoYes, except in America where discussion of the metric system is banned in 48 states and therefore the unit of screen size measure is the stevethumb, defined as the area of the legendary thumbprint of Steve Jobs. Example usage: “Did you know the first iPhone’s screen was only nine stevethumbs? So tiny!”
- MezzoDelCammin 3y agowell, in the US context, I'd expect the "legendarily tiny thumb size" to be derived of the "donaldthumb"
- bheadmaster 3y agoThe "tiny hands" meme is really funny from European perspective. First of all, how do you know he has tiny hands? It isn't readily apparent in his videos. Second, why does it matter? It's not like he's a competitive slapper, he's a politician.
- sanitycheck 3y agoJust because he doesn't like people saying it, and that is sufficient reason for it to persist. Personally I think people should be talking about bigger things than his tiny hands.
- rtuulik 3y agoThe "tiny hands" joke isn´t funny because Donald Trump has tiny hands, no one cares about that or if it is true. The part that makes the joke funny, is its origins. In the 80s journalist was writing a story about Donald and mentioned his small hands in it. But Donald Trump is so insecure that even 10 years later he kept sending cut off pictures of himself from magazines to the author, with his hands circled with a marker, to prove that his hands werent small. The fact that the marker was gold coloured was a cherry on top. The sheer stupidity of this entire thing is what makes the (though overplayed) joke funny. Some random source with not that many details. https://abcnews.go.com/Politics/history-donald-trump-small-hands-insult/story?id=37395515 https://abcnews.go.com/Politics/history-donald-trump-small-h...
- bheadmaster 3y agoWell, that explains it. Seems like US has a lot of these inside jokes that don't make sense to someone who only sees snippets of the whole historical timeline. Thanks for sharing.
- MrOwnPut 3y agoIt's more of a petty "joke" that leftists use because they don't have anything else. It's at the level of a modern SNL skit, all superficial and more of a "mean girl" insult on appearance than satire. GP was correct in saying "no one cares about that or if it is true." That's not the point, the point is to insult.
- _heimdall 3y agoYou realize the concept of cheap political jokes exists in all parties, right? Or is "let's go Brandon" not a cheap joke used by "rightists"?
- MrOwnPut 3y agoActually the "Let's Go Brandon" phrase has an interesting origin of a reporter trying to say the crowd was cheering for a Nascar driver named Brandon while they were clearly chanting "Fuck Joe Biden". So it became a euphemism for the actual phrase they were cheering and a callback towards that event that shows the media's biased coverage. So yes, I think that phrase is a bit deeper than saying someone has tiny hands? over and over for a decade.
- _heimdall 3y agoSure I know the back story of the Brandon joke, I just don't see how that's any different from the tiny hands back story. Both started out from one otherwise unimportant interaction that happened to become popular and taken out of context. I don't disagree that the tiny hands joke is old at this point, but really what is the difference when they both have some origin story and become a political meme aimed at a particular politician?
- teekert 3y agoAlternatively, use the TimHookLowerArm^2, which is pi+1.27 * stevethumbs^2. This is more intuitive than the stevethumb for larger screen sizes.
- varjag 3y agoUh, the area should be measured like everything else. In fractions of football fields.
- usrusr 3y agoI'd prefer it to be specified in how well it fits in my pocket.
- thiht 3y agoAmericans will measure with anything but the metric system
- devnullbrain 3y agoi.e. the diagonal?
- andreareina 3y agoWidth has been an issue for me.
- happymellon 3y agoLength for me. Being able to reach the top of the screen with one hand and also having it poke out the top of trousers with smaller pockets are both problems that don't always happen with the same diagonal.
