RIP Metaverse, we hardly knew ye
- pipo234 3y agoThe Metaverse — mostly a solution in search of a problem. Like many (if not all) of the hypes of the last decade, being hugely expensive, was just a way to "invest" all the cheap money pumped into the world economy.
- AHOHA 3y agoBecause Facebook (and so is google) are both pure evil corp companies that made their profits by selling their users’ data to the highest bidder, under the disguise of having advertising as their core business model. So when it comes to an actual groundbreaking innovation, they will mostly fail, like the hundreds of failed google projects, and if it wasn’t for their multi-billion funds and investors -including the government- they would be out of business long ago.
- dtagames 3y agoActually, I think we knew ye quite well and rejected ye out of whole cloth. Second Life has been around for 20 years and is niche. DisneyQuest closed and that was Disney. Google Daydream was a nightmare. Etc. There is no use case for a metaverse and connecting disparate ones across different vendors won't happen because each vendor is disincentivized to have competitors interchange players or data with its space.
- jfengel 3y agoBut the name Meta lives on. And, if I remember correctly, the stock symbol.
