But you have no problem at all using their services for free?
- porkbeer 3y agoWhy would I? I support all my favorite creators directly as youtube does not pay them enough to continue to produce great content. Most either do it for free or by patreon.
- pb7 3y agoYou won't fund the company that your creators use to host their videos? Why should YouTube host their videos then?
- everfree 3y agoI really wish YouTube would stop hosting everyone's videos, all at once. Just give ample notice, then disappear. It would be a painful event, but we'd finally get some much-needed competition in the video hosting space.
- pb7 3y agoCompetition would be good but I'm not so sure that (lack of) competition is the problem. Serving video is just expensive, period. The smaller the economies of scale, the more expensive it is per view. I don't know what the solution is.
- everfree 3y ago> Serving video is just expensive, period. That's part of it, but not the whole story. Network effect is a bigger force. People publish on YouTube because there's a large viewership, then YouTube gains viewership because people publish there. Other companies also have big economies of scale on hosting. Amazon, Microsoft and CloudFlare come to mind. Network effect, not cost, is the reason they haven't bothered trying to build competitors to YouTube. If they could guarantee a viewership half or even a quarter as large as YouTube, I'm sure they would have launched one by now.
