This was a surprise, I was expecting news on layoffs from a company I had never heard of.
- ftxbro 3y agoThis is the fourth time I saw it in the news. The first time was when they made the company and got a billion dollars valuation for a company that specializes in labeling data for machine learning. The second time was when I was curious which LLM company is the one funded by the military. I was looking for an 'Eric Schmidt joins Google' moment except for LLMs. When I searched, I saw that Scale was the one that had contracts with the Air Force, while Microsoft was getting the more traditional military AI contracts that Google was declining (like Maven). The third time was in an announcement from the whitehouse last week (https://www.whitehouse.gov/briefing-room/statements-releases/2023/05/04/fact-sheet-biden-harris-administration-announces-new-actions-to-promote-responsible-ai-innovation-that-protects-americans-rights-and-safety/ https://www.whitehouse.gov/briefing-room/statements-releases...) where they said "The Administration is announcing an independent commitment from leading AI developers, including Anthropic, Google, Hugging Face, Microsoft, NVIDIA, OpenAI, and Stability AI, to participate in a public evaluation of AI systems, consistent with responsible disclosure principles-on an evaluation platform developed by Scale AI-at the AI Village at DEFCON 31."
