Personal anecdote:
I was being recruited by an early startup funded by a16z. It was not a crypto company, but could have had some tie-ins. Part of the process was an hour long chat with one of the partners there (I won't give their name).
We talked about a lot of stuff and they spent some time talking up crypto. I politely hinted that I didn't see how it was going to be useful (at least in the way they were talking about it). And we kinda debated a bit. They couldn't really give me a reasonable justification for any of it.
Then they finally made the key point, "Look a lot of people think this is going to be the next big thing. So it will be."
At the time I took it to mean, "All the smart people know this is going to be great, so get on the bandwagon."
But, later, I re-thought it as, "We define the market and we are going to make it a thing whether it makes sense or not."
Honestly not sure what was meant (if either), but: I didn't end up taking that job.
