I wanted to go iPad only for live music for a while, but found the supporting hardware to be lacking. (This was like five years ago.) I spent money on a dock that would allow me two audio inputs (microphone and guitar for example) and a USB jack for plugging in an external MIDI keyboard. The experience was somewhat janky and unreliable. I wonder if that has changed.
