This is bad in multiple ways, as other have said every a 5min check is ludicrous, but the article focuses on losses for the developer in a complete disregard for their users. Some people still have a limited data plan or pay according to usage (people using their mobile phone as a hotspot), in any case, downloading a 250M file without user consent is an abuse.
