There is one thing that I cannot reconcile in my mind. First is the advice to 'make it a story' - I think it really improved my writings. The second is blog posts like this one - what has this whole life-story to do with the point about abrasive on-line pundits? And actually it is not only blog posts - journalists often do the same thing, but maybe they don't so often write about their own lives.
