Rufus: The Reliable USB Formatting Utility
- theamk 3y agoTL/DR: this is am open-source Windows utility to format USB drives and create Windows bootable disks, compute checksums and a bunch of other things. It has its a bundled implementation of FAT (written from scratch?) and ext2/ext3 (modified linux code?), its own SMART parser, bundled SHA implementation with SSE support, etc... It's very Windows-sy: without easy access to libraries or command-line tools, author either re-writes functionality from scratch or copies files into project and then modifies them as needed. It's hard for me to imagine writing Linux version of SMART tool for something as simple as disk formatter, but that's how Windows apps work.
