Chess.com: Bootstrapping a Community to $50M/Year
- ftxbro 3y agoThere's also an amazing free (as in libre, actually communist, probably stallman approved) alternative called "lichess". Of course it's not a fair comparison because any new player will always use a website called lichess.org instead of chess.com because they will see that the name signifies liberty which they greatly value.
- cutler 3y ago'li' == 'libre'. Yeah, right, so obvious.
- grayhatter 3y agono li from linux oh... seems I'm wrong. https://lichess.org/faq#name https://lichess.org/faq#name ... I know I heard that somewhere... I wonder if I can find it
- jokethrowaway 3y agoThe ux is just not there, compared to chess.com The crazy achievement by chess.com wasn't writing chess software. It was to create the community and make people excited about chess.

- rowanG077 3y agoI honestly believe chess.com didn't have much to do with it. Streamers and youtubers popularized chess and chess.com rode/is riding the wave. Which is impressive in itself.
- suddenclarity 3y agoThey did pay streamers and YouTubers to promote the site and ran multiple streamer competitions. So they definitely took advantage of it and incentivized people to stream. Even Magnus began playing a bit on the site despite being part owner of a competitor, if I understand it correctly. Porsche is attempting a similar path in iRacing by running multiple competitions with both pros and well-known streamers. It generates great content that attracts new people. Win for everyone involved but it wouldn't happen without someone pulling it all together.
