If you look at the historical trend with technologies, it's very clear: look at the saddle, the stirrup, the chariot, the pull-cart, the carriage: all of these inventions increased the breadth of tasks that a single horse could do, but each time this only increased the overall demand for horses. Surely the internal combustion engine will be no different.
