Gmail ads are getting more annoying
- thot_experiment 3y agoInsane that a whole article is written about ads being annoying without mentioning that this is actually a solved problem with a tool called uBlock Origin that's free and open source that anyone can put on their phone or computer. Seeing ads is a choice, teach people how to make it. (obviously it's not actually insane but totally par for the course, it just should be insane, and seems insane to me, a chronically online person who has seen a couple internet ads per year for the past decade and a half)
- hammyhavoc 3y agoDoes it work on the ads in the Gmail app for Android?
- autoexec 3y agoWhy would you ever use an app for a website? Opening a browser gives you the same information, with far more control over how it is presented to you, without the extra data collection and ads that come with using an app.
- hammyhavoc 3y agoBecause: - It allows swipe gestures and thus triaging emails much faster - Gmail extensions function properly - Gmail mobile UI sucks versus desktop because most people will use the app - It works offline - It has push notifications - You can make audio/video calls via Google Meet Data collection isn't a problem for me in my email because my threat model assumes all email services are compromised either at my end, the servers it passes through, or at the recipient's end. Anything sensitive goes via Matrix protocol, or you tell people to login to Nextcloud or Bitwarden to access a specific piece of information.
- richardjam73 3y agoThere are no ads if you use the default inbox.
- commoner 3y agoNo, but there are some very good free and open source email clients for Android that are compatible with Gmail and completely ad-free. 2 of my favorites are: - FairEmail: https://email.faircode.eu https://email.faircode.eu - K-9 Mail: https://k9mail.app https://k9mail.app
