I don't think they said otherwise. I believe the point was that JVM bytecode doesn't expose anything for manual memory deallocation at runtime.

  would seem trivial to map free() to a garbage collector call ...

    Or just make it a noop, and use a malloc implementation that returns ByteBuffers/arrays.
