> One would require cities to permit backyard flats and other accessory dwelling units by right. Another law would allow duplex homes to be built in places zoned for single-family housing. If Montana Governor Greg Gianforte, also a Republican, signs even a couple of these bills into law, Montana will have leapfrogged several East and West Coast states…
What? California (the most populous state, and most of the West Coast) has both of these provisions in law already.
- jjeaff 3y agoI'm not sure what the restrictions are for adding single family units. I sure haven't seen any popping up yet.
- strawhatguy 3y agoThe other bill mentioned is more sweeping however, I don't think CA has a cap on building codes for example, nor limits public comment to only the beginning of a project. These are nice changes, good news too: zoning is an affront to society in general. Never saw how letting Karens have veto power with your stuff would've ever worked out well, glad to see the tide turning.
- millimeterman 3y agoCalifornia's permission of converting single-family zoned land into multifamily housing is in name only. It can only be done by owner occupiers - not by developers who want to buy land and build on it. Which basically never happens.
