The longer we use the "Artificial Intelligence" label, the more we will be misguided in addressing the current issues. Having "black box" algorithms has been an issue for years, and I believe transparency in code, much like the IRS can audit your books, should be considered. Third party non-profit orgs should be able to audit highly influencial code as is done to some degree in getting patents. My guess is most of the time the societal issues that arise are a biproduct of production moreso than by design. Ex: I doubt facial recognition software engineers intend for the tech to have difficulty with darker complexions.
