The article conflates AGI with "consciousness", which is a really basic misunderstanding. Pretty discrediting.

- hartator 3y agoHow is it not?
- pookha 3y agoMost AI uses some variation of deep-learning (CNN-resnet for example). In my mind that's really just some variation of fancy counting.
- kalkin 3y agoConsciousness is about experience. Intelligence is about capability. Dogs are conscious, but can't add two digit numbers. ChatGPT is not conscious (almost certainly, although we don't really understand consciousness well enough to prove this), but can add two digit numbers.
- Symmetry 3y agoIt's not necessarily about experience except in the discipline of Philosophy. Cognitive scientists have their own ideas and theories about consciousness, like Global Workspace Theory. However, since LLMs are feed forward networks incapable for remembering things beyond their input window they also conspicuously fail to be conscious by those definitions too: [1]https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Global_workspace_theory https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Global_workspace_theory
- goatlover 3y agoConsciousness is subjective experience. Intelligence is problem solving, abstracting, reasoning, generalizing. There's no requirement for those things to be accompanied with subjectivity. And there's no reason to think LLMs have subjective experiences.
