I thought BSL was a subset of Scheme, so it avoids most of those problems you mention. Or do I misremember?

  They should have just used standard R7RS small. Creating a variant only serves more confusion.

    Not in a class room setting. For someone that stumbles upon HtDP and begins in the middle, there will be some confusion.
