I have always thought there should be a floor on salary that put these positions in the top 10%, plus a requirement that they fund a scholarship or training program in the same amount as the salary.
With the 2 H1Bs that I have hired, it would still have been worth it and anything less is just a program to artificially reduce costs for companies.
- LinuxBender 3y agoThat might curtail some of the massage parlors in the bay area. They are all H1B in massage and acupuncture. There is a whole industry behind it, getting people citizenship by finding lonely men. They target lonely guys in the tech industry, marry them and in some cases drain their assets and sometimes also take corporate secrets. I used to think it was all about selling sex but it turned out that was just the way to get people in the door. I went down this rabbit hole when the parlors would get mad at me for wanting an actual massage.
- manuelabeledo 3y agoThis is patently untrue, and easily disproved because H-1B data is publicly available. Only six people got a H-1B visa under the premise of working as massage specialists, since 2012 [0] [0] https://www.h1bdata.org/jobs/31-901100/massage-therapists https://www.h1bdata.org/jobs/31-901100/massage-therapists
- LinuxBender 3y agoIt's a temp work visa specific to those trades. They said H1B but maybe they meant something else. There are thousands of them in the bay area alone. In each parlor only 1 person spoke english. It was hard enough to get them to use more force. Oh, I should share that lesson learned. Whatever you do, when trying to get the parlor owner to translate "harder", don't use the phase "make me cry".
- manuelabeledo 3y agoAgain, H-1B numbers are public, and do not back your comments.
- LinuxBender 3y agoLike I said, that's just what they said. There was most certainly a language barrier. Maybe they were illegal aliens for all I know.
- giardini 3y agoMassage therapists qualify for H1B? "and in some cases drain their assets and sometimes also take corporate secrets" Sounds like they're draining more than assets: Is there a sperm donor facility next door too? This type of problem sometimes comes in twos. Just sayin'! (scene set on a small ethnic cafe in lower SF): 7-year old Paki-American boy strolls in: "Rohaan! Hello, I am your long-lost son. Are you not glad to meet me? Rohaan (confused): Excuse me, I am eating my paratha! WTF are you! 7-year old boy: Mom can tell you - she's at the door -see her waving, huh?. She says remember seven years ago in downtown San Francisco when you enjoyed a wonderful "happy ending" massage? Well, she saved the ending and with it planted ME and I am half YOU! I am so very happy to finally find my father!(tries to hug) Rohaan bolts for the back door, paratha in hand (subsequently flies to Islamabad, assumes a new identity and lives a modest remainder-of-life in celibate penitence).
