    Quite a while (decade+?) ago, I heard from an anti-spam drone at Google that they had thought they'd figured out the key to spam mitigation: make it prohibitively expensive ... only to discover that political spammers did not care about losing money as a side effect of propagating their talking points.

      Precisely. It's a bit like those ads for some charities: the charities don't care about the cost of the ads as long as it nets them a benefit, even to the point where a very high fraction of their spend is advertising, sometimes even more than they spend on their declared goal.

"I demand censorship of views I disagree with", redux How will this look when the roles are reversed? Feels shortsighted, but also unsurprising. Lines up perfectly with the truthiness, "My truth is bigger than yours" theme. Scientism has become the new secular religion, with all of the intolerance decried as backwards and illiberal elsewhere. There's also doomsday theology. Repent by tabooing meat or worse. Just yesterday someone posted a link here: "Man ends his life after an AI chatbot 'encouraged' him to sacrifice himself to stop climate change" I'm not outraged, but disappointed. Hoping we can do better. The entire philosophical premise is problematic, but I doubt we'll have a chance to explore that in a genuine way here. Some people forget that Google is not a public service and will do what profits them and their supporters. Youtube has recently been taking down videos of interviews with RFK Jr with the excuse of covid misinformation. Kim Iverson got a strike to her account just for airing an interview with the biggest contender to Biden.
