> The International Council on Clean Transportation predicts that it might cost as much as $1 trillion for decarbonizing the industry and that ticket prices will have to rise as much as 22% by 2050 to foot the bill.
By 2050.
Inflation alone will probably cause prices to double by then, and we're in the middle of a very unpredictable period of technological development (thanks to AI, etc.,) so I wouldn't worry about an estimated 22% price increase that's nearly 30 years away.
- nindalf 4y agodang could you modify the title to include "2050"? The title feels a bit clickbait right now, like the price increase is imminent.
- mathgeek 4y agoIt’s not just clickbait, though. It’s also designed to acclimate consumers to the idea that not only will prices always go up, but the prices today should be considered a good value while they last. It adds a sense of FOMO to purchasing decisions, while simultaneously pushing previous price increases into the background.
- 1980phipsi 4y agoI haven't read their piece, but implicitly they are making an argument about a supply shock that is tangential to the underlying inflation rate in the economy.
- 1980phipsi 4y agoThe 22% figure comes from this report, I believe, https://theicct.org/wp-content/uploads/2022/06/Aviation-2050-Report-A4-v6.pdf https://theicct.org/wp-content/uploads/2022/06/Aviation-2050...
