There is no doubt that having some good basic Latin knowledge is useful, I presume particularly so for someone not native to any of the Romance languages, as it allows to understand many words, even in non-romance languages and recognize their origins. As I see it the issue is not so much with Latin in itself, but rather with the way it is (or was) taught (though I never studied it, I am told that Greek is/was the same).
