All I'm assuming is that it is aware of and acts in the physical world. It doesn't seem like a big stretch that people would build AIs that do that. It doesn't have to "understand mortality." Worse for us probably if it doesn't share human concepts like that. Five years ago ChatGPT was in the realm of sci-fi.
