I believe people picked up on this 9 year old’s proposition as a symbol for needless waste that stays around forever in large quantities. There are many simultaneous efforts to reduce plastic going on: some are trying alternative methods for producing it (bio plastics), some encourage the use of alternative materials (eg bamboo plates), others ban it outright (plastic bags in SF), and try to not have it offered by default (the origins of the straw bans). I don’t see the flaw in doing all of the above simultaneously. The problem is real and obvious, and given how embedded plastic is in our lives, we need an “all of the above” approach to change.
