What, that BYD is a formidable competitor to Tesla and that it's good for EV companies to be succeeding? Of course, the mission of Tesla is to accelerate the transition to sustainable energy - it's good for other EV manufacturers to succeed. BYD is the top contender. But it’s not Tesla that needs to worry, BYD and other Chinese EV companies are going to do to the US market what Japanese automakers did in the 80s. It’s going to be ICE vehicle market share that will be taken.
My whole point is that the headline is misleading. It leaves out important details and has wording to insinuate Tesla is losing in some way. "Tesla rival..." "profit soars more than 400%". The opposite is more truthful, BYD sales have suffered due to Tesla price cuts. The headline could have been written: "Tesla rival BYD sales plummet over 20% in 2023"

- 8n4vidtmkvmk 3y agomentioning tesla is the only way I'd even know byd is a car company making luxury electric cars. well.. ok i guess you could write "luxury ev company byd..." without mentioning tesla.
- cinntaile 3y agoThat doesn't generate nearly as much clicks and newspapers are in the business of making money. I wouldn't call it misleading though, now you know it's an EV company and the rest is clear too.
- sixQuarks 3y agoIt’s not a luxury EV company though, most of their vehicles are plug-ins, and most of their BEVs are of the cheaper variety. They have only recently introduced a more expensive EV that competes with Tesla, but it’s a small fraction of their sales.
