Their sales, profit, and revenue also dropped by a decent amount compared to last quarter, while Tesla’s sales increased.
What’s the point of this article being on HN?

- wootland 3y agoAcording to the article, BYD's sales and profit are both up. > Tesla rival BYD has reported a more than fivefold jump in net income for the first quarter as the Warren Buffett-backed Chinese group shook off a rabid price war and slower sales growth that hit foreign and local rivals in China.
- sixQuarks 3y agoThat’s compared to the year ago period. If you compare to last quarter it’s down 20%

- jjulius 3y agoAnd just like BYD, Tesla's Q1 profit for this year was also down 24% from Q4 2022. https://www.macrotrends.net/stocks/charts/TSLA/tesla/gross-profit https://www.macrotrends.net/stocks/charts/TSLA/tesla/gross-p...
- sixQuarks 3y agoYes, but the point is Tesla reduced margins so they can continue growth (which they did), at the direct cost of competitors losing sales (which byd did).
- wootland 3y agoAgain, the article says that BYD is up 400% so they did not lose sales. If you have some data that contradicts the article, you should post it.
- sixQuarks 3y agoTheir sales have gone down 20% compared to last quarter. What more data do you need?
- wootland 3y agoQuarter to quarter comparisons make absolutely no sense because sales are cyclical, hence why they're comparing to the same quarter last year from which they've demonstrated 400% year-over-year growth.
- cinntaile 3y agoI was wondering why you were reacting so negatively. Your comment history has a clear pro Tesla and Elon bias so that explains it. I don't get why though. Isn't it good that several EV first companies are succeeding? This also matches my anecdotal experience, it's the only EV first company besides Tesla that I have seen on the roads here so they seem to be selling cars here in Europe.
- sixQuarks 3y agoTelling the truth is reacting negatively? The headline is misleading.
- jjulius 3y agoI'd be genuinely curious to see you respond to the question/idea posed in the second part of that comment.
- sixQuarks 3y agoWhat, that BYD is a formidable competitor to Tesla and that it's good for EV companies to be succeeding? Of course, the mission of Tesla is to accelerate the transition to sustainable energy - it's good for other EV manufacturers to succeed. BYD is the top contender. But it’s not Tesla that needs to worry, BYD and other Chinese EV companies are going to do to the US market what Japanese automakers did in the 80s. It’s going to be ICE vehicle market share that will be taken. My whole point is that the headline is misleading. It leaves out important details and has wording to insinuate Tesla is losing in some way. "Tesla rival..." "profit soars more than 400%". The opposite is more truthful, BYD sales have suffered due to Tesla price cuts. The headline could have been written: "Tesla rival BYD sales plummet over 20% in 2023" See what I mean?
- 8n4vidtmkvmk 3y agomentioning tesla is the only way I'd even know byd is a car company making luxury electric cars. well.. ok i guess you could write "luxury ev company byd..." without mentioning tesla.
