Claiming that Gimp is a Photoshop replacement is really doing OSS a disservice. I believe it's highly likely that people who make this claim haven't used Photoshop in a very long time. The incredibly sad truth is that there is no OSS Photoshop - but at least there's Affinity products (which don't work on Linux/Wine, so I find myself screwed in this regard no matter what).
- anta40 4y agoI know Photoshop is widely used by pro photographers. But for us hobbyists, perhaps Gimp is sufficient. Maybe there are some Photoshop features that are not implemented in Gimp, but hey we don't need those anyway.
- pjmlp 4y agoSame applies to other listed alternatives.
- mmcclure 4y agoYeah I was really surprised not to see the Affinity suite listed for the Adobe alternatives. It may not be FOSS, but it certainly seems like the more truly comparable set of alternatives than what’s on there.
- wetpaws 4y agoKrita is oss Photoshop. Gimp is oss mspaint.
- hammyhavoc 4y agoLibreOffice et al are not Microsoft Office replacements either. Thunderbird doesn't even come close to full-fat Outlook if you're a power user. Are they alternatives? Yes. For a large number of average usage scenarios, it suffices. If you need x, you'll likely know that you need x and continue to use x. For the average Joe who uses "Microsoft Word" as a synonym to describe "word processing", or "Photoshop" as a synonym to describe "image editing", it'll be fine. The same people call game consoles "a Nintendo" or "a PlayStation", even if it's an Xbox, same people who called any generic MP3 a player "an iPod". That's fine. This same train of thought are the people that parrot "desktop Linux can do everything now". For the average Joe, perhaps. Need to use a niche piece of hardware or want to install Linux on a modern-day laptop and/or use every piece of hardware on your device like a docking connector on a ThinkPad? Forget it. It's half-baked for the power user that cares about niche features.
- fredley 4y agoNot OSS but Photopea is an embarrassment to GIMP.
