I have never had problems renting from individuals. It is when _everything_ is handled by some legal entity that it all goes down hill. As long as the actual owner of the house is a human (not a company), and I can talk to them, I have no issues. Maybe I am just a disarming conversationalist, or maybe I just got lucky.
