Anyone care to reqrite Windows in Rust to boost security and performance
Historically, the vast majority of security issues encountered on the Windows platform have been memory-related bugs. Rust can provide a highly effective solution to this long-standing problem, and Windows programmers are well aware of its potential.

- RadixDLT 3y agoI would like to see windows xp rewritten in rust and creating a new OS
- Am4TIfIsER0ppos 3y agoRewrite old Windows please. Not this modern garbage with 4 different UI styles, unmovable taskbar, tile design start menu.
- kingkongjaffa 3y agoIs rust really such a leap forward that we should rewrite many things in it, or is it just the new hot thing?
- xp84 3y agoI think it’s very likely some of each. Assuming we are talking of a scenario where there is sufficient testing where we can be assured we aren’t introducing new bugs, it’s probably a good idea to do rewrites after a couple of decades have passed, and to use whatever the state of the art respected language is, is if it has demonstrable advantages.

- ActorNightly 3y agoRewriting things in Rust doesn't always guarantee memory safety, especially in writing optimal performance for OS where you are forced to use unsafe blocks. Regardless, I have a small hunch that Windows as we know it is on its way out. Microsoft fully embraced open source. I would put a small wager on Microsoft rolling its own custom linux distro for future versions of Windows. It will play extremely well with everything they are doing.
