I’m curious how much initial effort it took you to get decent at it

  Not very much, surprisingly. It was in a period of my life when I was practising a lot, which might have helped. It took only about a month before I went from having to reason about what note it was to just knowing instantly.

    I usually use the technique of finding the interval from the lowest note I can hum - did you reason with a similar technique?
