Staffing will remain the the biggest challenge. Attracting scientists and mathematicians who understand the problem domain of what this body of Fortran represents is critical. These persons will either lead continued development in Fortran or oversee the AI conversion onto another platform.
- d0mine 3y agoIt seems learning Fortran is much simpler than learning nuclear physics
- avidphantasm 3y agoYeah. Suck it up. If you can learn the math needed for your field, you can learn FORTRAN.
- Bostonian 3y agoYes, but there is a big difference between FORTRAN 77 and modern Fortran.
- rightbyte 3y agoYe sadly Fortran seem to have jumped on the bloat train like pretty much every other language other than C.
- cookieperson 3y agoThere's a good chance if you learned the math, and work in a field requiring HPC you've seen and interacted with fortran directly anyways
- kergonath 3y agoPretty much. It is not a complicated language to wrap one’s head around. The biggest hurdle is overcoming the prejudice.
- mkj 3y agoFortran is simpler to learn than C++, and much simpler to learn than the applied mathematics that the programs embody. Just make sure the Fortran code is confined to applications it's good at (maths, not IO or data shuffling) and people will be happy to learn on the job. I was!
- angry_octet 3y agoWe have to train new staff in how to do C++ programming now. Fortran is much easier to explain than C++. As soon as people go from toy problems to big compute they will face the same problems that led to solutions like Fortran. What we might see is Fortran being generated from higher level specifications, particularly distributed parallel computations using task specific processors.
