It was lovely that Steam tried to get so many folks to make Steam Boxes. Hopefully the Steam Deck doesn't have to remain singular. I, for one, think Windows is inferior for users, broadly, and hope the Deck becomes a replicateable success in turning the tables on the desktop/decktop stranglehold.
- mattl 4y agoOne of the things I hate about the Steam Deck is the previously Windows using video game community dominating the reddit community, etc. Everyone is looking for the kind of hacks that Windows users seem to tolerate while also posting fairly simple and low detailed problems, and expecting support. I’m sure that scales okay for Windows gaming but not for niche Linux gaming.
- rektide 4y agoYear of the Linux decktop and suddenly it's Eternal September all over again, eh? Its a far off hope but like maybe after some time of not everyone being chained to the cave wall looking at a marionette version of what computing might be, maybe, maybe maybe maybe, we'll start to build a better culture. If we are lucky.
- mattl 4y agoI think the year of the Linux desktop was the era where people were foisted Chromebooks. I want people to use Linux. But I don’t think Linux benefits from Windows-style hacks to get things done. I’d like to see Valve being way more representative in those reddits, etc
