Spam (and the resultant filtering) is killing independent email, and it's an ongoing problem on Big Company Hosted Email too. I barely use email anymore. Everything at work is mediated by Slack or Atlassian. With friends and family it's almost all text messaging. My kids' schools and sports teams use a bunch of different proprietary web and mobile apps to communicate with parents.
