Glass or plastic: which is better for the environment?
- ZeroGravitas 4y agoThis makes a common mistake of talking about "energy" in a vague way. The energy used to recycle glass is much less of a problem if its provided by renewables: https://feve.org/glass-industry/projects/furnace-future/ https://feve.org/glass-industry/projects/furnace-future/ Apparently the state of the art is that 80% of the energy can be provided by electricity, with various schemes to eliminate carbon from the final 20% This, like EVs, is part of a virtous loop where electrification leads to more renewables, which leads to more electrification. The future is lots of little optimisations like that. Another example is returnable glass bottles that weigh less and last longer: https://glasshallmark.com/introducing-echovai-the-worlds-first-returnable-bottle-made-of-thermally-tempered-lightweight-glass/ https://glasshallmark.com/introducing-echovai-the-worlds-fir...
