DV camera capture via 1394a was once available across several Linux distros but then suddenly disappeared way back, I'm guessing probably due to licensing issues. Tools like the raw1394 driver, dvgrab, and kino often would no longer work as my hardware changed and kernels updated. For pulling video from DV tapes I played around with an ancient Mac Mini but then ended up buying a cheap, used HP PC with integrated 1394a port running Windows 98, transferred that data to a Linux box for editing, moved the files to storage, then retired that old PC. Several external 1394a drive cases performed excellently for me all along but have long since been retired. I still have a bunch of 1394a cables in my collection.
