Show HN: Microsoft Designer – From Idea to Designs in Minutes, Using AI
Hey,
We all have ideas for visuals that we wish we could quickly bring to life for social media and other daily needs - but we don't all have the design skills to make it happen.
To solve this, we built Microsoft Designer (designer.microsoft.com) to help quickly and easily create just about anything you can describe. You can type in an idea (try "a retro post advertising a summer concert series") or add your own content, and Designer will generate one-of-a-kind designs with AI.
As you’re creating, Designer has ideas for you all along the way. Things like adding a little motion, adjusting your layout, trying out different GPT-generated headlines, or trying crisp AI images generated with DALL-E.
When you’re ready to share to your socials, Designer offers suggestions for AI-generated captions and hashtags to get more engagement and can automatically resize your designs to share across multiple platforms.
We launched Designer 6 months ago via an early access waitlist. Our waitlist customers sent us some great feedback, filed plenty of bugs that we’ve since addressed, and now we’re making it available to everyone.
We can’t wait for you to try it out and let us know your thoughts! And we’d love to hear how we can make it even better.
- hitiks 3y agoThis has preview tag with it, but seems quite elaborate as it currently stands. I was just experimenting with it and found it quite easy to use.
- gautamhans 3y agoYes, we were in waitlist for 6 months and just opened it to public to try. Glad you liked it. Would love to get your thoughts on the experience and if you are facing any challenges
- nsonam 3y agoLooking forward to the advanced AI tools that are coming soon! AI Fill looks super useful!
- gautamhans 3y agoYes, AI fill can basically expand your image. I would also recommend AI background replace which can change a background to what you describe - a product photo could look professional - or you can make yourself transport to a new destination like e beach, the moon :)
- mdor 3y agoHi! Are there limits to how many times we can use Dall-E? Are we going to pay credits every time we generate images? What is the maximum size dimension of a DALL-E image I can generate?
- thinkmaya 3y agoAt this time, there are no limits on how many times you can generate an image using Dall-E on Designer. That might change in the future though.
- thinkmaya 3y agoAs a PM on the Designer team who also has a sister who is in animation (a prof and practicing animation), I am keenly interested in hearing perspectives from experts and creatives. How should Designer evolve?
- komalsachdeva 3y agoJust tried designer. Love it already! I wanted to be able to use custom fonts within designer, how can I do that?
- gautamhans 3y agoGlad that you liked it and thanks for sharing the feedback. Custom fonts is in the works and should be coming soon!
- vs4vijay 3y agoI agree, a tool like Designer would be useful for many different projects, and the ability to generate new designs and use AI is really powerful. Thank you for making it available!
- gautamhans 3y agoThank Vijay - do share your feedback/thoughts after trying designer, we would love to see what designs you create!

- DerekJohnsonSV 3y agoMicrosoft Designer is built from the ground up to make graphic design easier than ever. We use a combination of in-house AI, DALL-E and ChatGPT to create stunning designs in seconds. I lead product for Designer and would be happy to answer any questions or take any feedback of what you'd like to see next!
- layer8 3y ago“Design” and “designer” are too generic terms. The web page doesn’t really tell me what this is about. You say “create just about anything you can describe”. But I guess this tool maybe is not for designing (say) clothes (as in cuts), or a 3D model, or a floor plan, or a CPU, or a business workflow, or a software architecture, or a PowerPoint presentation. My best guess from the web page is that it is for creating single-page 2D documents with images and a bit of text, but I’m not really sure.
- gautamhans 3y agoAlso here is a youtube video which explains how it works https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vQK-E_Mzeq0 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vQK-E_Mzeq0
- gautamhans 3y agoThanks for asking - Designer helps make design for social media and other daily use cases like postcards, event posters etc. super easy Suppose you get an idea for a tech event and want it to stand out - you would typically go to design tools and find the right template, add text and images and then drag the elements to ensure design looks good overall. Designer aims to simplify this - you could just share your idea "a tech event about AI trends" and Designer will find you the template, images and even title (using GPT). You can then just review and make simple edits and you are good to go - this should save you a lot of time. I would love if you would try the product (you just need to login with your Microsoft account) and share your thoughts on what you liked/disliked :)
- nycdatasci 3y agoIt seems like there is a lot of positive feedback in this thread from newly created accounts. It looks like there's an issue with authentication because the SSO provider is generating invalid tokens. How can people actually use this?
- gautamhans 3y ago@nycdatasci: Are you logging in via your enterprise account or your personal microsoft account? We only suppot microsoft personal accounts for now Could you somehow share a screenshot and share on my email (on my bio). We would love to look at it and figure out a way to solve this
