Perhaps the single greatest source of caution is the huge uncertainty around the future trajectory of AI technology.
Compared to previous technological leaps – such as railways, motorised transport and, more recently, the gradual integration of computers into all aspects of our lives – AI can spread much faster. And it can do this with much lower capital investment.
Yes, as we move forward the future becomes more uncertain and less predictable. This level of uncertainty is going to increase anxiety. What skills do you invest into? When they may become obsolete before even acquired.
As long as useful AI's can only be built by large corporations with unlimited resources, inequality may increase. However, at the same time the counter to that is all advancements in AI might be easily replicated by others at a fraction of the cost. As demonstrated by Alpaca.
AI is likely to lead in the area of unexpected consequences for all of society. The question is whether the positives will outweigh the negatives.
Just keeping up may become a futile endeavor.
"Climbing the skill ladder is going to look more like running on a treadmill at the gym. No matter how fast you run, you aren’t moving, AI is still right behind you learning everything that you can do" - https://dakara.substack.com/p/ai-and-the-end-to-all-things https://dakara.substack.com/p/ai-and-the-end-to-all-things
