The subways are competing with Uber? Why didn't Uber lobby against the building of subways and forestall them?
- steveBK123 4y agoHow many subways have the MTA built since the existence of Uber? How much confidence do you have in the MTA expanding service in your lifetime? Yes, tons of people ride the subway and also ride Uber for some trips when its too late (safety)/trains are too infrequent (service)/theres delays (service)/for comfort/etc.
- JumpCrisscross 4y ago> How many subways have the MTA built since the existence of Uber? Two: the Q and 7 extension. The T is on the drawing board [1]. [1] https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Second_Avenue_Subway\ https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Second_Avenue_Subway\
- steveBK123 4y agoRight, projects that were like 50 years in the making, long delayed, etc. The 2nd phase up to 125th probably takes another 10 years and $20B if we are lucky. The final leg down to Hanover Square will be a race against FiDi sinking into the sea in the 2100s.

- steveBK123 4y agoI'd add to this - the subways pricing has increased at far less than the level of inflation, wage growth, minimum wage, etc. In 2003 the subway fare was $2.00. (This is $3.32 in 2023 inflated dollars) In 2023 it is $2.75. In 2003 NYC minimum wage was $5.15. Subway far was or 23 minutes of minimum wage labor. In 2023 NYC minimum wage is $15, and shortly going up to $17. Subway fare is 11 minutes of minimum wage labor. What really caught me off guard with the rise of ride hailing apps was how many of my GenZ coworkers were using them frequently for commuting.
