The building he had a flat in is: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_San_Remo http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_San_Remo -- a rather exclusive place even as NYC goes and he eventually sold it to U2's Bono for $15 million.
Maybe being allowed to buy a flat in there and membership of the club are somehow connected (the club seems to be an exclusive, expensive invite-only gentlemens' club)
