I'm over the moon for these chips ready, but next year Strix APUs are going to be mind blowing. Leaks have been calling them Ryzen 8000 series but I would not be surprised if they become new Z chips. https://www.notebookcheck.net/Massive-AMD-Ryzen-8000-Zen-5-leak-Strix-Halo-chiplet-APUs-targeting-Apple-silicon-efficiency-with-RTX-4070-class-graphics-along-with-new-Strix-Point-and-Fire-Range-APUs.709446.0.html https://www.notebookcheck.net/Massive-AMD-Ryzen-8000-Zen-5-l...
Strix Point is 15-45W, Strix Halo is 20-120W. Halo with unified 256-bit LPDDR5X, for some m.2 style awesomeness albeit not on package. This is like the APU rebirth of a Threadripper, an ultra high bandwidth monster... Not the same HDET market ("only" 16 cores) but just an absolute monstrously capable chip none the less.
20-120W! That's some scaling. I really think people drastically underestimate how good modern chips can be at powerscaling down. Right off the bat with the first Epyc, Matthew Dillon of DragonflyBSD was testing power down performance & seeing chips run crazy fast at 65w and below. Multi-chip Infinity Fabric is a bit of a new damper for now, but it too will scale down & improve. The ability to turn off a couple cores, to clock down, to drop. Voltages is ultra compelling for gaming decks like this, to be great when plugged in, but fierce as needed.
I can't wait to see how compact cooling becomes a competitive advantage. By 2030 I fully expect we'll have 75W+ decks that throttle way down on battery but absolutely tear it up when plugged in.
Hopefully more and more of these systems run a mean Linux too! This Asus is very tempting but man I wouldn't go near Windows at this point & don't trust them on Linux. After years of trying to make Steam Box a thing, sharing the tech, I'm not sure how much of the Deck OS is available for reuse, don't know how far beyond install arch, setup some drivers, start in Big Picture mode they went (supposedly big picture mode is getting more like Deck mode which implies a more complicated scenario). Very interested in the Deck OS future here.
A bunch of comments yesterday on these Z1 chips if you missed it, https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=35709096 https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=35709096
