I think there is a lot of dark pay-for-headline money washing through extremely desperate and cash-poor media websites. Gawker/Jalopnik/etc also does that and man are they cash poor.
How much does it cost for oil/gas and incumbent ice companies to get anti-Tesla anti-Musk stories out there with these places? It's not like they have journalistic integrity (no one does these days, especially when it comes to the environment).
I recall handwringing pre-2010 about drop in journalistic integrity, then there were layoffs aplenty in media, and now you don't hear it from ... anyone. Media centralized to like four companies, revenue is king. TV media has always been talking heads and entertainment, the egos of TV media never cared about integrity as long as their face was on TV.
The fact that even "print" media has no one alarmed means the entire fourth estate is purged.
That said, Musk makes it easy to be a target. He is the modern twitter age "there is no bad publicity".
One thing that has become apparent in the last decade as newspapers have passed through multiple hands and layoffs, magazines died, and google and facebook have taken the lions share of advertising, is that journalistic integrity has died and media properties are nakedly devoted to 1) advertisers and 2) clicks at all costs.
