Mastodon (both the software and the communities around it) is the first successful mammal in a world of dinosaurs.
The challenges highlighted in the post feel generally true but the conclusion of it being doomed doesnt follow.
What you have in the broader fediverse and its protocols is a alternative set of blueprints for building online interaction spaces. All transparent, open source and not predicated on obscene business models (gulping the planet's entirety of private data) in order to survive.
Dinosaurs will continue roaming the digital Pangaea for a while but it is their gene pool that is doomed. They actually face all the same issues in essence, but are considerably less nimble in coming up with viable adaptations.
Will people launching mastodon instances in vast numbers in five years? Will it be an elixir bonfire? Maybe a pythonic AI fediverse? I don't know what will evolve. But that meteor on the sky is harbinger of major changes coming up.

They should have named it "Rodent" instead. >Dinosaurs will continue roaming the digital Pangaea for a while but it is their gene pool that is doomed. Is it? In the real world, the thing that doomed the dinosaurs was the Chuxhulub asteroid impact, and the resulting climate disaster. Is there going to be some kind of massive apocalypse on the internet that destroys Twitter/FB/etc. and clears the way for the new mammals?
