I don't know. I'm happy paying $12/yr ($1/mo) for an account. If operation costs are half that, a few thousand users can make a nice side gig hosting this. Why does everything need to scale exponentially or it is doomed? Federation avoids the "winner take all" trap. I don't know if Mastodon is going to grow or if something else (Bluesky?) will replace it, or if we'll just all stay on Twitter. But it doesn't seem to me like it's doomed.
